Chennai
Kannagi Art District
Located off the Old Mahabalipuram Road in Chennai, Kannagi Nagar is one of the biggest resettlement sites in India. Made up of multi-storied apartments, it houses a population of 80,000 people living in 24000+ households with residents including people rehabilitated from three of the city’s river beds, slums across the city, and people affected by the devastation of the 2004 Chennai tsunami. In February 2020, closely working with the Greater Chennai Corporation and the Chennai Smart City Limited program, we made it the site for India’s fifth public art district, working with 15 artists whose pieces focused centrally on the themes of migration, displacement and movement.
'India Pop' at Palladium Mall
Conceptualised and produced as an interactive journey through facets of popular culture spanning the breadth of India, India Pop was a special project in association with Palladium Mall Chennai. Located at the mall - a location diametrically opposite to Kannagi Nagar, the event sought to enliven the site with unique urban art interventions (three engaging installations in this case) while connecting two geographically and culturally distant parts of Chennai and reintroducing the area of Kannagi Nagar to Chennai’s residents, and the Kannagi Art District to the citizens at large.
