Lodhi Art District

Lodhi Colony, New Delhi

2015–2020

India’s very first public art district is located in Lodhi Colony - a residential compound for government employees. Centrally located, with wide pedestrian friendly lanes, the colony is now a walk-through gallery showcasing the most diverse styles of Urban Art. Over 50 artworks have been added to the district since work began in 2015.

The art district model is aimed at reimagining urban neighbourhoods as walk through galleries of contemporary art, open to one and all. Over the years, the Lodhi art district has become a source of community pride for its residents, encouraged cleanliness and maintenance of the neighborhood, while putting Lodhi Colony on the global map.

2015 + 2016

The vision for the Lodhi Art District began with 2 walls in 2015. An Initial exploration of the viability of Lodhi Colony as an art district, the first two murals were made with artists Lady Aiko from Japan and DALeast from China.

The 2 murals in 2015 and the positive response of the residents and authorities that followed, enabled us us to envision a much larger project in Lodhi Colony.

In 2016 26 artworks across were created across 10 blocks of Lodhi Colony . Comprising a lineup of Indian and International talent, artists worked across two months to create a public art gallery that is open for all.

Community Outreach

One of the most important parts of building an art district is the inclusion of the residents. Over the years we have done several workshops and projects catering to their preferences. The 2019 festival also saw the creation of a community mural called 'Saath Saath' (together), which was the outcome of a series of workshops followed by open for all painting sessions on the weekends.
