Mahatama Gandhi at Churchgate Station
Brazilian street artist Eduardo Kobra adapted a photo of Mahatma Gandhi alighting from a train into a mural at one of Mumbai’s landmark locations - the Churchgate Railway Station. Part of his global Faces of Peace project, he dedicated his work at Churchgate as a tribute to Gandhi’s contribution to India’s freedom struggle and his significance globally. He hoped that the mural would convey a message of peace and harmony and encourage people to imbibe the values the Mahatma stood for.
Mahim (E) Art District
In October 2017, the region of Mahim (E) in Mumbai became the launchpad for India’s third open-air, public art district. Encompassing the areas of Dharavi, Matunga Labour Camp and Shahu Nagar - together forming Mahim (E), the art district saw the creation of artworks by national and international artists who used local narratives to inspire their pieces. Artworks in the region were conceptualised and executed with the objective of encouraging the city’s citizens - who generally might not venture into Shahu Nagar and Mahim (E) - to both discover its cultural milieu and get a chance to engage with its people.
Sassoon Dock Art Project
The Sassoon Dock Art Project was an experiential exhibition organised in the unconventional space of one of the busiest docks in the city of Mumbai - the Sassoon Docks. The 144-year-old site was converted into an urban art exhibition, which remapped the DNA of Mumbai, for two months. The exhibition hosted artists to create installations, audio-visual experiences, murals, screenings and curated tours that were site-specific. It was an attempt to encourage the city’s residents to understand and take note of the cultural and historical significance of the space and its inhabitants.
Lunar Dome at the Nehru Planetarium
In November 2019, we collaborated with Asian Paints and Sideways Consulting to pay a tribute to Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) exemplary work through a special project. On a white dome on Mumbai's Nehru Planetarium’s terrace, artists Sharad, Alam and Munir Bukhari worked over 10 days to create a veritable ‘Moon in Mumbai’.
'Sport Doesn't Care'
Carrying the simple yet insightful claim of “sport doesn’t care”, New-Delhi based artist Khatra’s piece on the basketball court of Mumbai’s St. Andrews College highlights that inherently, sport doesn’t discriminate. But the labels and tags we give to people and things as human beings do. Inaugurated on the occasion of International Women’s Day 2020, this St+art Court, realised in collaboration with Adidas and Asian Paints, uses an impactful yet minimalist typographic approach to vouch for a more inclusive sports culture.
